  1. Performance-Based assessment is the newest learning for me. I did not even know it was being used. It's good to know it's coming around. It interesting to see what it's based on.

  2. McTighe on Assessment. His seven techniques are very useful, and as shown is David's presentation, it uses the concept of assessment to promote learning, instead of just measuring student's performance.

  3. Several of the presentations about philosophies of grading are new to me, but the most applicable topic is Ana’s presentation on Rick Stiggins. The stated role of ATI in creating high-quality assessments and using them in the service of students presents a goal I know about in a new way. I appreciate that Stiggins links these tasks together to give a more accurate picture of why creating high-quality assessments is important for a teacher.

  4. Kim's presentation of Guskey's Grading was new to me in that I did not know this was a method that was being pushed; however, this is something I have incorporated into my own grading. With at-risk students, all of them would fail if I used the traditional "zero" policy for late and unsatisfactory work. Usually, I will allow extended time on assignments. My redo policy keeps the first poor grade and allows the students to redo the assignment to create a new better grade. I am glad that this is a method that is being pushed as I believe the students are much different today than in the past.

  5. Guskey's Grading was new for me. There are too many students today who are just not phased by a "Zero". There has to be a better way to reach these students. Having an opportunity to redo in order to produce a better grade and maybe understand the second time around. Grading on the basis of what a student has learned and can do may be the future.

  6. We had some awesome presentations this week and my have we grown as a group in presenting them. My best learning came from Ana's work on Stiggin's ideas on assessments and how to use them as a learning tool and not just a measuring stick. It parralled my work with McTighe and really broadened my thinking on the whole testing field. Thankyou, Ana.

  7. The newest learning for me was Ana's presentation on Rick Stiggins. I was not aware of his Assessment Training Institute and all that it does to help teachers. His work strikes me as unique in how it emphasizes student involvement in the assessment process. He places a great deal of responsibility on the student for self-assessment and monitoring. It makes sense though if classrooms are learner-focused that the learner would have an active role in developing assessments.

  8. Ana'a Rick Stiggins on assessment was newest and best. We have a professor on our campus that uses ATI but I never paid attention to what ATI was about. The presentation showed me what the boxes I carried are about.

  9. I agree with you David. The presentations were all good this week. We have all found a way to give the most important information in the best way. Let's keep this work up for the last few weeks! Thanks to everyone!

  10. Maybe this doesn't meet the promt criteria exactly but this is what I've taken from this week. We need to assess understanding but we can't abandon the importance of trying. What I'm struggling with is how do you do this while motivating your higher level learners. If you only assess understanding on a minimal level your higher ones will get it, but if effort is not a factor how do you get those higher level learners to push themselves.

  11. There were quite a few assessment models that were new to me. I think that Laura's presentation on Doug Reeves and Grading was the "bestest"... I understand in a better way what they are currently doing in several of my son's classes this year. All of the concepts that Laura discussed in her presentation are in place this year with my Freshman son.
